Grandmamma's solitaire rules (2 decks of cards)<< Grandfather's Clock | Great Pyramid >>

Goal: One card is dealt to determine the starting rank for 4 'foundation' piles that build down. Move out the same rank in the other 3 suits when you can, and build them down to piles of 13 cards each in the same suit. Kings play onto aces.

Another 4 'foundation' piles build up. Move out a card in all 4 suits when you can, one rank higher than the starting card, and build them up to piles of 13 cards each in the same suit. Aces play onto kings.

A layout of 22 cards is dealt. All 22 cards are available for play onto the foundation piles. Empty piles are filled from the deck.

Turn over 1 card at a time from the deck, playing to the foundation piles if you can. The top card can be placed onto any pile in the layout, regardless of rank or suit. However, there is a 2-card limit. No card may be covered more than once.

Up to 4 cards may be set aside, rather than playing them onto the layout. These cards all remain available for play.

Also known as: Grandmamma's Patience, Grandmother's Patience

Variation of: Grandfather

Difference: The layout is increased from 20 to 22 cards. Rather than a waste pile, up to 4 cards may be set aside, all available for play. A dealt card determines the starting rank to build down from. There is no redeal.

Only 4 cards can be set aside, so you can't be too fussy about covering cards in the layout. It's often a good idea to cover cards of a different suit. Covering the same suit can block the lower card from getting out if you're not careful.

Having a random card decide the starting rank makes it more challenging to keep it straight in your mind what's high and what's low, especially since you're building in both directions.
